If you’re a beginner at shipping, you may be wondering what type of equipment you need to get delivery done efficiently. When it comes to over the road shipping, that means you’re going to need a truck. But, with so many different types to choose from, where does one start?

You want to save as much time and money as possible. That’s why the drayage carrier you utilize to make deliveries is so important. First, you’ll want to look at what you’re shipping and the overall size. Depending on the details, pick a truck that will best suit your unique needs.

Here, we have a list of the various trucks you’ll encounter. It’s a good starting point to learn the basics of drayage equipment.

Dry van trailer

This is one of the more common trailers that is entirely enclosed. The main advantage of using a dry van is that goods stay well-protected against the elements. This type of trailer is loaded from the rear by using a loading dock. Sometimes a loading dock is not available, in which case goods can be lifted into the truck using a liftgate.

Straight truck/ box truck

Smaller in size with a trailer that doesn’t come unattached from the main rig, this type of truck is great for short routed deliveries- like moving furniture. They aren’t the best suited for long distance shipping, but if you need expedited service, this is the carrier for you.

Flatbed truck

The flatbed is the king of the road, mainly because of how versatile it is. This sturdy trailer does not have walls or a ceiling, just a flat bottom. This makes loading and unloading much easier, since forklifts can work from any side and angle to get items on board. This is the type of trailer you want for heavy haul, because the open sides allow for dimensional flexibility.

Gooseneck trailer

This is a specialized (and more expensive) trailer with a detachable front that can be dropped down to create a ramp for loading. Heavy duty is the gooseneck’s middle name, as it can haul up to 150,000 lbs.

Refrigerated trailer

If you are shipping perishable items, such as pharmaceuticals or food, preservation is mandatory. Goods that need to be kept at a specific temperature at all times get transported in a climate controlled trailer or “reefer”. The shipper can set the trailer’s cooling system to the appropriate setting, and voila. No melted ice cream after hours spent on the highway!
